If you ask people to sum up characteristics of a facilitator, there’s this one word that always pops up: neutral. A good facilitator is neutral. I’m not sure if that’s correct. I’m not even sure if I can be neutral at all. I do try to be on the third side…
This talk of mediator William Ury is not about being neutral, it’s about being on the third side:
The third side of a conflict is us, it’s the surrounding community, it’s the friends, the allies, the family members, the neighbors. And we can play an incredibly constructive role.
Look at it that way, and we’re all facilitators.
